A.Dandruff is a common condition that causes flaky, white to yellowish, dry to greasy scales. It generally affects the scalp, inside of the ear canal,eyelashes and beard area. It can occur with or without reddened skin and itching that may vary in severity. It affects almost half of the population at the post-pubertal age and of any sex and ethnicity. It also has seasonal variations.
Dandruff is a condition of scalp skin due to a combination of an over production of skin oil/ sebum and irritation from a yeast called mallesizia.
Q. WHat is seborrheic dermatitis?
A.Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition with similar causative factors that affects skin in places like the sides of nose, behind ears,crease between lips and chin, etc.
Q. Is dandruff associated with acne?
A.Dandruff may be responsible for causing acne of the shoulders, upper chest and back.
Q. Does dandruff cause hair loss?
A.Dandruff is not responsible for hair loss.
Q. How is dandruff different from psoriasis?
A. Dandruff may be confused with another condition called sebopsoriasis, where the scales are large white colores, thick and adherent to the scalp skin.

A.Dandruff can be easily managed with right choice of anti-dandruff shampoos, leave on scalp lotions and sometimes, oral medicines can be added.
