Skin & Hair Care for Monsoons – Part I ( Face)

  1. It’s important to wash your face 2 to 3 times a day during monsoons. Humidity causes a lot of sweating and oil deposits on the skin that attracts a lot of dust and grime. This can in turn clog your pores and cause acne break outs and bacterial infections.  For oily skin, it’s better to use a 1 % salicylic acid based face wash and for normal to dry skin, choose a non-soap foamy cleanser to ensure good cleansing without ripping the skin off its natural oils.
  2. It’s a common myth that one doesn’t need a sunscreen during monsoons. Infact a lot of photosensitivity reactions begin in monsoon. So a sunscreen is a must; irrespective of rainy or sunny and has to repeated every 2-3 hours. Also if you are planning a monsoon trek, make sure you wear a water resistant sunscreen.
  3. For those who are used to applying toners to their skin, choose an alcohol free one.
  4. While most beauty experts insist on frequent exfoliation during monsoons, it generally depends on individual skin. If your daily face wash is cleansing enough, once a week gentle exfoliation is fine. Don’t go overboard on exfoliation as sometimes vigorous exfoliation causes loss of natural skin lipids and initiates compensatory oil secretion from the oil glands. This would also be a good time to explore a gentle exfoliative and rejuvenating procedure called Hydrafacial at your dermatologist’s clinic.
  5. While humidity brings a lot of oiliness to the face, it’s natural to think one wouldn’t need a moisturizer. But the truth is often, the use of harsh face wash and rigorous exfoliation can make the skin dry and rough. Additionally, the skin is dehydrated in monsoons because of the humidity. So if you are spending a major part of your day in an air-conditioned room, using a light weight moisturizer or thermal spring water spray over your make up will keep the skin supple.
  6. Let your skin breathe during monsoons. Avoid make up as much as possible. If you have to, use water proof light weight make up. Stay away from cakey foundations as they will attract humidity and clog pores causing acne breakouts. Mineral make-up would be a good make up of choice during monsoons. Make it a point to remove every bit of make up before going to bed.
  7. Drink lots and lots of water. There is a huge loss of water and salts thru’ sweat (due to humidity) that goes unrecognized.
  8. This would also be a good time to pump your skin with antioxidants and Vitamin C. Taking a simple Vitamin C tablet (Celin or Limcee or Ener C) daily after food can also boost your immunity against viral infections in addition to doing a world of good to your skin. Eat colored fruits to fill your antioxidant quota.
  9. Avoid bleaching and facials in this season, as they dehydrate the skin and make it rough and sensitive.
  10. Monsoons are a good time to explore peels and lasers as the sunlight is not directly on the face and hence the post care isn’t as aggressive.
